As some other posters have indicated, *some* larger motors may get good mileage - I hope these folks are speaking from personal experience, not just quoting EPA numbers.

My experience is that some definitely do not. My wife bought a new 2002 Accord with the V6 late last year. Driving with the a/c on in hot Florida weather, about a 50/50 mix of city and highway driving, this car struggled to get 20 MPG (this is by hand computation, not relying on a trip computer or anything). At times it would average around 16 or 17. This in spite of the fact that with it's "225 horsepower" engine, it couldn't outrun my '86 9000T (rated 165HP) in any kind of race, except maybe a 0-20 drag! We had no reason to beleive the engine was not operating properly - it started and ran perfectly, no "check engine" light, etc. After break-in, I switched it to Mobil 1 which gave us maybe 1 more MPG.

After getting disgusted with this after a few months, she traded the car on a '99 9-5 with the 4-cylinder LPT engine. Acceleration is not as good as the Honda but it's not slow either. And using a/c almost 100% of the time, same mix of driving, same driving style, she averages 26-27 MPG, again verified by hand computation.
