Variable Valve Timing...

is merely a change in valvetrain components. Saab could easily go with Variable Valve timing merely by bolting on a few pieces (an idea maybe?). All of Toyota's motors are using the same old blocks and bottom ends that they always have, the only difference is the addition of the cam adjusting hardware. The Mazda Miata is the perfect example. In '01 Mazda added Variable Intake valve timing to the existing 1.8 litre powerplant.
The advantage to our existing four cylinder is the fact that it's virtually bulletproof. Hydraulic Lifters, timing chain, etc. etc.; it's a very well built motor and longevity was definitely a prime factor in it's evolution. Achieving the 28-30mpg window is not tough with today's engine management; I think that all 6 cyl engines and most V8's will be there in the next couple of years. I've noticed over the past year that the reaction to the 30 mpg part of the Saab sales pitch has gone from oohs and ahhs to a more non-chalant acceptance. The competition is getting close on fuel ecomony, and putting out good horsepower at the same time. Oh well, I'm not worried. Why sweat the small stuff; we're still breaking sales records and expanding our marketshare. Everything else will work out on it's own.
Cheers,
Brian.
