Saab Viggen: EPA rated 28/19. 230hp, 0-60 6.5(?) seconds (although I've seen one reviewer report 7 seconds)

Acura CL Type s: Same EA rating, 260 hp, 0-60 6.4 seconds. Not much different, and at a $7-8K less price.

BMW 330i: 27/19, 225hp, 0-60 6.7 seconds.

Almost statistically insiginificant differences among three of Saab's closest competitors.

Look, I own a Viggen, I love the car dearly and picked it above all those cars (and more than a few more). But "ecopower" suggests environmentally friendly power. I take that to mean less emissions (but most cars on the road today, save the Honda ULEV stuff, are roughly the same there) and less fuel consumption. Which the Saab ain't got.

I may have exaggerated a little talking about the V8, but V8's at the bleeding edge nowadays pull in the high 200's to low 300's in HP. So, there's a BIG power difference. And don't tell me you could tweak a turbo 4 to get that kind of performance -- Saab hasn't done it, almost no one has (except maybe non-US market Scooby WRX-STi's and Mitsu EVO's at a listed 276hp (likely more)). The refinements in power you need start to affect overall driveability, durability and reliability -- sure the car will perform but it may not last long.

Anyway, I agree with you that Saab's extract tons of power from small displacement, and I personally LOVE the gobs of torque and hate the peaky Honda-type engines. But you can't say that Saab engines are more "eco" than anyone else. Maybe more efficient at pulling out power from a given displacement (although look at Honda's RSX and S2000....), but so far that doesn't seem to translate to better fuel efficiency.
