It's very easy to get 300 hp out of the Saab four and driveability is
not affected. Hirsch, Saabs' 'official' tuner gets more than this while
maintaining the original factory warranty. My present 9000 gets
very close to 300 hp. It had slightly less (228 whp) for 2 years
(40k miles). It shows no signs of being any less durable or
reliable. I think the bottom end of this engine can handle
considerably more, too. These engines, especially the B234R
are pretty robust. With easy changes to ancillaries, like bigger
exhaust and larger/better flowing intercoolers, higher output
with less thermal stress is easily attained. My engine, with its'
higher output, actually runs with lower EGT's and intake temperatures
than a stock B234R with 225 hp. My buddy thought the Vortec V8
in his new GMC had good torque - until I took him for a ride in my
9000. So, you're wrong on this - I've done it, Saab has done it,
and a lot of other people have tuned their Saabs to well over
276 hp.
