COSTCO gas is not the best Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Sat, 6 May 2023 10:31:46 In Reply to: Re: Ok, that is burned valves, not broken, Steven, Fri, 5 May 2023 14:46:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When multiple problems lines up, it can be enough to bring it over the edge.
Like in so many other scenarios of real life, you have "so many" stars that needs to be lined up for things to go haywire.
Bad gasoline can be the star that broken the camels back. Bad AMM (Air Mass Meter) cold be another and worn Oxygen sensor another reason.
100K on your engine is not too much but the first 2 years of this engine had some issues with timing chain and tensioner that gave up and also, by now, that I have learned that 100% of these engines will break the balance chain tensioner and guide at some point.
So getting a used engine of unknown pedigree is a chance taking and doing "only" the valves on yours is another. Not a fun choice to make and not a fun suggestion for a shop to give.
What I would suggest at this point is to do a leak down test of piston rings. Shop needs to have a special block off plate to do that. Drop the oil pan (to reseal the leaking oil level sensor, if equipped) and remove timing cover to replace complete timing and balance chain kit. Saab sell one. Replace all intake and exhaust valves, front and rear Oxygen sensor and air mass meter.
