Can your son work on the car? And do a good job? If you have him in a Saab it would be great if he knows how to fix it but even better if there's a Saab tech not far away.
I fixed something or other on the '95 9000 CS my daughter had in college every time she came home. There was no Saab tech where she went to school and she can only do basic stuff like plugs and filters. Now she's out west and has a Saab tech not too far away, but IMHO it's essential that you have a good Saab indy nearby if your kid is away from home with a Saab.
If your son can't fix stuff (or know that something's not right), I'd actually consider something other than a Saab. It's not that they are unreliable, but that you want something fairly common that the average mechanic can work on and not screw something up.
My daughter was 3 hours away in Maine, so I could go rescue her if necessary. Trust me on this... it's much harder to deal with when the kid and car are far away.
