This pulls at my 'heart strings', but I'd go Honda/Toyota. I've had five/one of each. Local garages will be much more familiar with them, plus they are built more like appliances. They're not perfect; they just need less tender care.
I bought our '99 9-5 SE as a safe car for school & Nordic ski transportation for my 2 teen daughters. Chose it over a Camry because for 1999 models the insurance company gave it a considerable discount that confirmed my biases about safety. This Fall my daughters will both be in college, and the SAAB will stay with us at home (my wife has already indicated she prefers driving it over her van . . ), waiting for them to drive it over breaks.
Just my thoughts,
Mark in Marine
