lest I scare someone off (remember this is a problem solving bb) by my wording... I mean: it is possible to sludge up a T5 (or maybe any car) if one is abusive enough with the oil change interval + does mainly short trips... but decent maintenance should almost guarantee it will be fine... the early T7 cars can have problems even with reasonably good care (eg by the book dealer maintenance), but will not always cause problems either... depends on many factors...
$1000 for a good condition 1999 is a steal. The car should sell fast. Expect the actual cost to be $2k after work, but even that is very cheap... I'd rather have my kid driving that than a 1999 honda if they were to get in a collision!
James...
