If I was so technically inclined I would have done it myself. Seeing as how I did not, I can only say that: from my research on here (there is a booster thread out there with discussion of length adjustment) and what the mechanic showed me and pointed to after I brought the car back from my once around the block and told him the brakes are on all the time, the rod has screw grooves on it and the part that needs to be adjusted can be done by turning it, whether by hand or wrench I don't know. But, this is the general idea.
My research also revealed that of greater importance, was NOT losing the pin that holds the rod to the pedal. It jumps off easily and can get lost in the plumbing down there. I can't tell you whether they did the job through the hood or whether they dropped something.
