98 9000 was very nice, especially if you have a hatch. I never owned a 9000, but a colleague who did + moved on to a 9-5 sedan did miss that hatch. I can see why: it is cavernous + beautifully executed on the late model 9000's (looks more clumsy to me on the older ones though)... 9000 was very safe for it's time, but the 9-5 is a significant step beyond that, so that may be a factor for you... build quality (especially interior) of the newer Saabs is not quite like the 9000, but it's still good. handling is good for a car that size, and can be improved with easy mods. I still have more fun in my c900's but the 9-5 is smoother and faster! reliability seems pretty good (with the right care + feeding)...
search this bb for buying advice. The motor on the 9000 does not suffer from some of the problems of the 9-5: a cheaper quality oil pump + a finer pickup screen are among the factors contributing to sludge in some cars. If you can find a 2004 or newer, the risk there is a little lower, but a well maintained older car should be good as well (again, check for tips on this bb, but using the right oil spec, short change intervals, pcv#6 etc, is what I would consider a prerequisite for "well maintained")...
good luck!
James...
