FWIW, I've owned at least one of everything SAAB made, including several 9000s. At present, I own a '98 CSE, a '95 Aero and a '05 9-5, so a good perspective.
Depends on what you want from a car. Yes, the 9-5 turbo four and five speed automatic transmission is more fuel efficient - high of 33 MPG, versus high of 28 on the 9000. Yes, it's quieter. Yes, it rides better.
However, the 9000 is more stable, more predictable, more utilitarian, more durable, more Saab-like and less of a transportation module.
Bottom line, my wife prefers the 9-5. I'm stockpiling 9000s.
