Nokian makes great winter tires... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Mon, 4 Nov 2013 08:22:24 In Reply to: WRG2 as dedicated winter tire?, Buck60, Sun, 3 Nov 2013 19:44:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm sure the WRG2 would be fine. I haven't run it. I think my biggest concern would be if you were running it year round, as it probably isn't the most ideal summer tire and then you're needlessly wearing down tread depth in summer that you do need the next winter. So as a dedicated snow it would make sense... at least if it's a really good deal! They are very winter oriented for all seasons, and were the first "all season" to have a mountain snowflake... but there is a huge range of performance/etc criteria in the "all season" category, and loads of compromises especially at any of the extremes in the web.
That said, I am running Hakka R's as dedicated snows (north and west of you new englanders)... To be honest, I'm a little disappointed with them in terms of ice performance. Snow is fine. My bar is the numbered Hakkas on c900's - still have one running hakka 4's, and it drives circles around the 9-5 in snow... stops better too... I don't know if it is the 9-5 or the tires... we had Michelin Primacy Alpins on the 9-5 prior to the R's and the R's are really not any better on ice, maybe a touch better on snow, and worse on dry...
However, Nokian is now selling a new R called the R2 which has grit in it like some other brands were doing... This could be very very good... we aren't allowed studs here, and this might be as close as it gets. Studs make a huge difference! If I was buying winter tires this season, the R2 is what I would look into! I actually wish I had held out a year now because the R was not really an improvement over the michelins overall whereas the R2 could easily be very good...
good luck!
