Do you get loads of freezing rain? Around here we don't - it's usually pretty cold, snow or sun... once the snow arrives, it's here all winter. I used to live in Nova Scotia, which has a climate similar to coastal New England. Hills + freezing rain almost necessitated studs... we don't get as much ice on the roads here as they are cleared fast, but I do miss the studs when we do... though I don't miss the noise from them all the other days when the roads are dry! I think something like the R2 is a good balance. Studs are banned here.
Lots of people here run the WRG2. It seems to be quite a good snow tire, and I agree, if you do a lot of bare road driving, the R is not really as nice as other options. Much easier to extend further into the spring and fall. Actually, the Michelin Primacy Alpin was a remarkably good balance in that regard also and might suit your conditions if he is mounting them on separate rims anyway. Nice touring tire. Directional, so maybe that vs asymetric might a consideration depending on what one prefers...
