In central New England where he lives the roads are snow-free most of winter. It's only when a storm hits that the roads are bad, and then only for a couple of days. That means that most of the time he'd be wearing down a softer dedicated snow tire.
The nice thing with the WR G2 is that it's a "severe winter" rated all-season, so it is very good in snow, but acts more like a normal tire on wet or dry roads. This makes it nice in late fall and late winter when you still might need snows. They are also much quieter than many dedicated snows.
Hakkas are definitely better, but if you don't need them all the time it makes more sense (IMHO) to use the WRs.
But whatever, as long as you put some type of winter tire on a car you can't go too far wrong. I need to do something for this winter, too. My old G2s are no longer winter-worthy!
