You are wise to be cautious because the plastic can be brittle from age, and the slider can be hard to release. You might put a rag underneath it and spray some lubricant. Even something like WD40 shouldn’t hurt the plug but it will make the slider easier to move. I usually use something like a small, thin blade knife to get it started but I have also used a small jewelers screwdriver. A while back, the sliders were still available but I haven’t looked lately. Once you get it started it should slide with only finger pressure.
