My 1990 SPG is insured for $10,000 currently, and I may increase that. I bought it for $4500 in 2006, with 150,000 miles. It was in very good, but not perfect shape. It is near showroom quality now, as I have taken great pains to restore it cosmetically (paint, dash, interior).
The value of that 1985 SPG depends on what YOU think it is worth. If it is "perfect" and everything you have ever wanted in an SPG, then yes I would recomend you pay good money. I do not regret the $4500 I paid for my SPG, and I looked at many, MANY of them before handing over the cash. It made a terrific basis to start my resto project. Then again, it is no longer my daily driver, and I am lucky enough to have a little money to so it is not a financial burden.
I have not had trouble with parts. What I can't get new, I get through salvage or fleebay no problem. I even used it as a daily driver until last year (when the resto went into high gear), and never was stuck due to lack of parts. I don't know if the pre-1987 makes parts harder, but I doubt it.
My Monte Carlo Yellow 1991 SE vert with 30,000 original miles is insured for $20,000.
