I recently got an 85 spg, not nearly showroom but the price was right and little to no rust. I also drive a 91 turbo (convertible). I was looking for an 85 specifically because I really like the tan leather and all the other years had the gray leather instead. I'm fixing it up, perhaps to eventually replace the 91 which is slowly dying of rust. I haven't driven the 85 too much yet, but it compares with the 87 turbo I used to have, which compares pretty well with the 91. I think the later years have more hp and other nice stuff like Justin mentioned. I did notice the brakes on the 85 aren't quite up to the job as an 87 or the 91 (but I haven't even started working on my brakes yet). On the other hand, having fewer niceties means a lot less stuff to go wrong! (Like anti-lock brakes or airbags).
I'm also battling some wiring issues and assorted annoyances, but it will be a nice ride when it's done.
As far as value -- I've always thought Saabs were rather hard to sell (unless maybe you're in one of the areas where they're more common). I suppose it's worth what you're willing to spend... I don't know if I'd go into it thinking it will escalate in value though.
