I bet that whine is the oil recovery cup getting slashed by the primary chain. According to Cmyles, a common mistake is putting the chain tensioner in "backwards" or reversed. We "think" that when the gears were installed, this tensioner was put in incorrectly.
The other possible problem that showed up was that the lower chain gear support bearings fell out of a pre-loaded condition. This might have happened prior to the #8 gear change, so we aren't sure of all the problems that could have contributed to the gearbox when it broke.
One quick way to tell if the oil recovery cup is being slashed by the chain is to look at the magnetic plug in the drain. It will have grown a rather nice head of "hair".....
AND, the whine could be a host of other things that more experienced such as Cmyles could point out too.....
