Hi, I'm Ian's friend with the rpm-dependent whine. I'm quite sure I put the tensioner back in right-side up. I even filled its little cup in the top up with oil and primed it so it tensioned properly. Unless the hard rubber pads themselves have a right-side up and upside-down (because they can be rotated), I'm confident about this part.
I _did_ take the lower nut off with an impact gun. I held the gear by hand, with gearbox in neutral, but once the nut came off, I unscrewed it so far as to wedge the gun against the A/C condenser, pushing in on the shaft. I assumed this was not enough to unseat any bearings, and that the bearings would likely be pushed back into place by the lower nut upon retorquing. Is this not the case? I used a torque wrench, to 75 ft-lbs, as per official instruction.
I have checked lubrication, and it appears that everything is getting oil as it should. I've been sticking an improvised dipstick into the primary case through the cover in the top to see if there is enough oil for dip lubrication, and the level seems to be good. Oil splatter is always evident on the inside of the cover as well after running.
I should also add that the whine is only present under load. Idling and revving with no load, it is silent. I've driven 300 miles (like a granny though) with no issue since the primary swap.
Thanks for any ideas you may have!! You're the best advice I've gotten so far!
