Landjet,
The chain tensioner assembly is a horizontal hydraulic cylinder with two pistons. The pistons have pads on their outer ends which press against the chain. Splash lube oil is captured in a well on top of the assembly body and passes through a check ball into the cylinder to create the pressure which tensions the chain. The body is basically symmetrical and can be incorrectly installed upside-down but in that case oil will be unable to enter the cylinder and the tensioner won't work causing the chains to flap. The pistons can be oriented with their holes facing in either direction. It's important to remember to fit the plastic plungers and spring on re-assembly and be sure that all the oil passages are clear and the check ball valve works properly.
