Thanks, Cmyles!
This is what Ian Scott said he suspected right away--ironic since I'm usually the one giving him gearbox advice! Do you think I should tear it all back down and change the bearing on this hunch? Or is there a way to check its condition? The races didn't look scored or pitted upon cursory examination before installation, but I could have missed something. What's the hazard if I just let it go? Can it seize and wreck the aluminum flange it sits on? Or would the rollers be more likely to fail and drop the shaft and sprocket?
I should also mention that the noise sort of sounds like an unsynchronized straight-cut gearbox, as found on a tractor.
I really don't fancy fabricating a press-fitting to remove the bearing with my redneck jack-press, nor do I fancy trying to remove that lower nut again. Guess it's about the easiest part of a gearbox rebuild, though.
