I just took a look in the Bentley because it has been a while since I've looked at this. Their picture shows them using a socket on the bolt end and a wrench through the slot. Both look woefully inadequate to remove the fasteners after 20 winters in the salt belt.
I would start by just taking a *big* breaker bar (24" is not going to cut it) to the outside end (the bolt) with easy access... if you can spin the bolt, you've made progress. Heat and penetrating fluid will help. But you need to apply *a lot* of torque to the lower bolt to get it to crack.
The 9-5 rear shock assy is more open, so access to the nut from the back is for sure easier. I agree - on the c900, I don't think you will have much luck working on that nut through the slot without a lift. The angle range is limited such that your lever arm that will fit between that and the floor will be too short.
Once you have the bolt spinning, if the nut still won't come off, I would wedge a wrench between the nut and the floor and crank on the bolt from outside.
good luck!
