Finished the driver's side rear shock. The Bentley manual is worse than useless on this job. Here are some more lessons learned:
1. Landjet posted a couple of years ago a way to remove the stuck shock, and it worked great. I put a large, deep impact socket on the hydraulic jack, positioned it up through the slot under the shock, and compressed the shock until it was high enough to clear the suspension arm. I unhooked and move the parking brake cable out of the way. Then I lowered the jack and quickly pulled the shock to the outside so that it dropped free.
2. Similarly, to install the shock I first installed and tightened the upper mounting point, then compressed the shock using my jack. Because the shock is at an angle, with the bottom toward the outside of the car, I had to shim the jack with a block of wood to make it rise at the same angle as the shock. Once it was high enough, I slid the bottom off the jack into its place in the suspension arm.
3. From there it took a lot of finagling with a pry bar to make the holes line up.
Now we're having a thunderstorm, so tomorrow morning I'll attack the other side.
