About 20 years ago my first car after graduating college was a beautiful but hi mileage 83 900 turbo sedan. Needless to say, I had to learn DIY car repair pretty quickly (Bentley to the rescue), and I can't think of a better car for a youngster to learn on. What would be the equivalent 12 year old car today for someone to learn DIY on? Maybe a 9-5?
Now in those days it was apartment life, so car repair can be a tricky thing, especially in winter. My ball joints (lower perhaps?) needed replacing and I rented the fork to separate it, banging away with the back of an axe. Finally freed it, and called it a day. I guess I thought I had retightened the nut. The next day I decided to move the car....CRRUNNCCHH. Jumped out to find the front wheel angled at 45 degrees and the lower control arm separated. I recall it having a good dent in it from I think where it was stopped by the body of the car. Wish we had digital cameras back then!
No harm done really - I got it all back together after desperately jacking the car up thinking "total destruction". Put another 40k miles before giving it to an Italian friend in the US for a few months...with 230k miles.
