Yeah, you'll need something pretty sturdy there to withstand the heat. The factory shield is a substantial piece of steel - and it has an asbestos (I think) section on the turbo models.
I have always wondered if the battery cover from a 9-3 would hold up there - I honestly don't think it would.
There are lots of places that sell heat shield components. One approach I've thought about would be to use a turbo heat shield to keep heat in the turbo, rather than a battery heat shield to keep heat off the turbo. That could work. Another approach would be to make a steel box or shield like the factory part, but then use an adhesive-type barrier to block heat. These types of products have made leaps and bounds since the '80s!

I've never tried these ideas because I just relocate the battery to the trunk and take it out of the equation entirely. :)
