There are 2 little internal sleeves at the base of the long studs. They fit into a recess of the elbow. Their connection to your difficulty is just that they offer additional surface area down there that can increase the stiction from just a little corrosion. I personally like Knock 'er Loose penetrant by K&W. There isn't a gasket there. Way back in the 60's Mopar big block exhaust manifolds bolted directly to the cast-iron heads. An old time mechanic used black grease on that joint. He said after the grease burned out it would leave a little carbon residue that would help seal the joint.
