Bought a 1989 Saab 900 sedan, non-turbo as-is. Not much rust. 70,000km on the odometer. Very clean inside. It had been in auto storage for last couple years and the owner had only driven it about 400km since he bought it a few years back. Took it for a test drive and, other than a bit of rattle in the front end that feels like suspension (he bought shocks but didn't install them, included in sale), and a lower bass note in the exhaust compared to my 1993 900 vert it felt really nice. I bought it and attempted to drive it home Saturday afternoon. Started great and I got about 30km into my trip when I stopped, topped off the gas with premium, and the check engine light came on. After driving for a few km it went off and all was well. Then I hit the highway and after about 10 minutes the exhaust under the car cracked. It was held together with hose clamps and was going to happen sooner than later. Other than being terribly noisy, and a little bit less power, it felt fine. Then after about 10 minutes the car just shut down completely as I was doing about 100km/hr. Couldn't get it to restart. It would turn over but not start. Checked fuses but seemed fine. Had it towed.
It's at the mechanic's shop now and they've spent a couple hours chasing wires and trying to find the gremlin. He says it is a "massive power issue". I've sent him the wiring diagrams from my Bentley's manual as he didn't have a schematic for the car. Is there a more detailed schematic for the car online? He says sometimes power doesn't even get to the fuse panel and that spark is intermittent as well. He thinks it's just power and most likely not the fuel pump but needs to get power working reliably before he can try and safety it. So any advice on places to focus would be great. Oh and the previous owner had an issue with the alternator last week and had a mechanic pull it out and test it and it was fine so re-installed it. A few variables maybe related, maybe not... but sharing what I know at this point. Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Jonas
