I have an 1989 normally aspirated 900. Two things to check - the Walbro fuel pump and the ignition amplifier on the right-side inner fender. Check for fuel should be relatively easy. If you jump the fuel pump in the fuse box, you should hear the pump.

The ignition amplifier is harder to check. You will have to check for spark.

The fact that it made it part of the way home is a good sign. I would also replace the fuel filter because it could be clogged from sitting.
