...not only does it circulate oil in the compressor itself, but also ensures that other seals, o-rings and valves are kept lubricated. This avoids the scenario that, come springtime, your previously functioning AC no longer works.
In our 83 900, there was a recommendation in the manual that owners operated their AC during the cold months every couple of weeks for ten minutes or so. Now the ACC does it all on its own.
