OK, now to add my 2 cents to the udder 25 cents here already !

David, I agree with the idea in principle - but I don't run my car only
every couple of weeks - and in an average 24 hour period it usually gets
started at least 6 times, usually more on days with many stops though.
That's simply too much (especially when it is below zero weather.).

A lifetime ago I did commercial HVAC work and I can only imagine being
handed my head on a platter when I told my employers how it was a great
idea to run 5 - 30 ton output units a few times each day and just to
ignore the costs, etc.; golly that would have been ugly stuff !!!
(And steam powered chillers with their pumps/cooling towers too ?
OMG, the start-up alone took all day and had huge cost factors.)

Silliness aside - the system simply runs too much when not needed in
the wrong climate conditions and I have seen this in every 9K I've
had (whose a/c worked at all) in the years ranging '87 - '94.

Moving down the replies now....Thanks John, yes - dehumidifying via
a/c is dandy when needed, especially in cars that are champeen foggers !

The Aero is someplace southward and is no worry to me because the a/c
in my very nice '91 works, as does the cooling fan, so I am set and
trust my mechanic - he is but one man and has recently had a serious
personal loss in his life and business, so I will not be among those
who are callous and discompassionate towards a good and honest man, and
if it takes a bit longer I'm Ok with that - he does very good work.

Hi Erik919kt - yes, I have at times programmed the ACC to start in ECON,
but lately un-did that because we are having chilly mornings, with hot
afternoons.

Like yourself I have great admniration for the Saab engineers, but I also
know a little bit myself and about the climate where I live - and I
respect that it is not possible to make a perfect car for all climates !

My car is not cranking excessively on cold days, and certainly never to
the point of near depletion of the battery or that would be a problem
and it would be fixed pronto.

You said:
'Once the engine starts, the alternator is providing plenty of current
to run headlights, ventilation fan, and rear window defroster, and re-charge your battery, provided you are not just driving a few blocks.'

I habitually own older cars, and have replaced alternators/brush packs/
regulators/batteries galore over the decades - and one thing I see as
true is that NOT pushing a charging system too hard does help it last
longer between needed replacements.
I compare my experiences to folks who leave alot of things switched on
all the time (lights, wipers, stereo, heater blower, rear defrosters)
and I have seen them needing repairs much more than I have.

Later, you wrote:
>As for the heater, I had an '88 9kt with a broken cabin temperature sensor fan, and it got super hot in that car on the coldest Wisconsin winter days. Ten degrees below zero and I had a window open. Clearly, Saab makes a good heater. If yours is not providing enough heat, consider whether you might have a bad thermostat or a blockage in your heater core. If you're using tap water for your coolant system, and you live in a hard water area, then you could have mineral deposits clogging things up.

We get some fairly chilly weather here in Vermont as well, and in most
cases the heat is enough to clear all but the worst icings we get (when
nothing less than a flamethrower can clear the messes !).
What I referred to was the inappropriate responses of the ACC, which
have been common to all my cars with ACC in all the model years I've had.
And....I use straight coolant most often, so any blockage is unlikely.

SteveJ:
> AC is turned on by ACC when not in ECON but compressor solenoid only energizes if the temperature of the evaporator is not too cold. Your anti-frost thermostat is either not good, or has been bypassed. There is also a 10 second or so delay in compressor engagement following starting (might be controlled via a relay rather than ACC).

It may be that the anti-frost sensor has been fubar an all my cars !
The delay in mine is just long enough for the engine to be started and
running for sure - and like I said, most mornings if I don't have the
fuse pulled for the a/c it snaps the whole shebang on at once - ouch !

> Fan motor seems adequately sized to me, they only fail after very high mileage.

DC motors are not sized like line-voltage AC motors, and that is one
teeny little motor if viewed when it is by itself - does way more work
on a daily basis than window motors, but is smaller !

Lastly:
> Flap for ventilation probably could have been better designed but I've never seen one break on its own. Broke one taking the core out once but luckily was able to easily repair it with a metal splint.

Yes - you were lucky indeed ! Mine was shattered to bits and the only
fix was replacement when the fan motor was also done.

It may be the best they could do and even better than what other makers
have done - but if I could wave a magic wand and change from ACC to
manual HVAC I'd do it in a heartbeat !!!

As always, the give and take here is wonderful and I appreciate all the
great response that even such as my disorganized ranting gets - what
wonderful people there are at TSN - three cheers for everyone !

Best Wishes,

mark
