I agree with most here when I say that the ACC on my car is fine with me. While the manual system might be the better choice on an aging car, my ACC has never really let me down. I run mine in Econ, but hit Auto from time to time to cycle the AC compressor. Even in the summer, it start on Econ. If I want it to be cooling, I can a hit a single button.
Now, since we're talking about HVAC systems in cars, and we seem to be wishing for good old days where you can tell the car what you want it to do, I'll nominate the BMW e30 (3 series, 1984-1991) as the best HVAC system I've ever had. (Other BMWs of the same vintage had very similar controls). One dial for temp, one dial for fan speed (6-series BMWs had rheostat fan speed controllers), a button for recirculation, a button for the AC compressor, and three infinitely adjustable sliders for the defrost, vent, and feet.
