On 9000s, you just:

Release the two bolts on the strut-to-steering spindle joint (alternatively you can release the three bolts on the ball joint at the control arm).

This gives you enough movement to be able to rotate the spindle away from the transmission for axle removal. Removal is easy once you get the axle splines free of the hub by hammering it out on the end of the axle. Leave the axle nut on the end of the axle and hammer on that so as to avoid mushrooming the axle.

With the axle free of the hub, you just remove the crimped clamp from the inner CV boot at the inner driver, and pull the axle free.

I recommend removing the axle because it's far easier to work on joint removal with it on a bench. Depending on your year, though, it can be next to impossible to remove the joint.

Personally, I simply replace the axles rather than fuss with the joint to replace the boot. The plus here is that it's far quicker and you get new inner and outer boots; the minus is that reports of bad replacement axles have been growing more frequent in recent years. I have been lucky myself.

So, in a nutshell, the 9000 procedure is pretty minimally invasive by its nature, even if it might not seem so at first glance. Consequently there really aren't any shortcuts per se.
