I can't answer the question with certainty because I don't own any 9k's anymore. You may have a point. Then again both the axle shaft and the hub fit together through longitudinal serrations which mesh together. The force used by hammering required to separate the two parts will be the same as that from the gear puller. My recollection is none of the 9k's I owned have any wheel bearing failed after I serviced the drive shaft.
