...I was using the technique of removing the CV joint from the axle in order to replace the boot. As Yaofeng and others point out, it's just as well to do this from the inner joint rather than struggling to get the outer joint off.
The axle nut needs to be loosened with the car on the ground, I forgot to cover that step (it's on there very tight so you need the car's weight to keep the axle from turning instead of the nut). Then, yes, rethread the nut a turn or two prior to whanging away when you reach that step of the process.
