Striking the outer end of the front axel transfers the impact directly into the front wheel bearing, making dents in the bearing race. The only thing preventing rapid failure of the bearing is the dents are toward the side of the race rather than in the center where the bearing normally operates. If you like the thought of replacing the bearings then hammer away.
