I was going to say the same thing working the drive shaft on the bench except the buying a rebuilt drive shaft part. It is so much less messier having the drive shaft removed to do on the bench.
To remove the drive shaft you need,
a 1/2" drive breaker bar with a 32 mm socket,
a 4 lb hammer.
To work on the drive shaft you need,
a gear puller,
a pair of snap ring pliers.
Other than these I found a pair of tile snippers available in the tile section of Home Depot indispensable in installing the boot straps.
Get the drive shaft retiaining nut when you buy the boot. The nut is one time use.
