To a certain extent I was venting frustration, been a long day (also had to return a leaking rebuilt caliper to Autozone). Feeling warm air out of the vents was a real letdown.
I had been thinking about the oil issue. The guy who evacuated the system recommended putting a couple ounces of oil in, but what started me on this in the first place was inadequate cooling even though pressures were more-or-less OK. Adding more oil would worsen the situation, which does match the current symptom. I could consider blowing oil out of the evaporator with some compressed air to reduce the amount in the system, but of course don't want to wind up with too little and damage the compressor.
My concern about the dryer is mainly that it is old, probably the original, and it looks like the system will need to be opened again. (Though hydrocarbon refrigerants are supposed to be more tolerant of moisture than R12 or R134a.) If it was easier to get to I'd have already changed it.
On other cars I've gotten halfway decent cooling with the first can of HC refrigerant. The 2-1/2 cans installed now should be pretty close to correct, don't want to overcharge it either. I'll check pressure vs. rpm more closely this weekend, only had time for a quick look today. (Wrenching on the car has to stop when the wife gets home from work.)
