Details: pressures, temperatures, and observations Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Sat, 25 Jun 2011 13:49:07 In Reply to: Excess Oil, marvinstockman, Sat, 25 Jun 2011 08:46:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I took some time today to try to get detailed information on what is happening in this AC system, took no action other than to bleed off what appeared to be an overcharge.
Observations:
Refrigerant is hydrocarbon (Enviro-Safe).
Compressor runs and the condenser fan works.
Mixer flap observed to be working.
Low side pressure drops when engine is revved up.
Sight glass showed refrigerant flow, did not see excess oil.
Large evaporator pipe is cool to touch, small pipe is hot.
Evaporator temp. about the same as outlet temp. (measured in aquarium).
With ambient temperature of 85 degrees, pressures initially were as follows (high psi, low psi, outlet temperature):
1000 RPM: 250 psi, 40 psi, 72 degrees
1500 RPM: rapidly shot up towards 300+ psi, 30 psi
(quickly turned engine off)
Since this looked like an overcharge situation, I bled off some refrigerant (no worries about letting loose HCFCs with EnviroSafe).
Results are as follows:
1000 RPM: 250 psi, 30 psi, 85 degrees
1500 RPM: 270 psi, 20 psi, 85 degrees
2000 RPM: 280 psi, 20 psi, 85 degrees
So... high pressure is on the high side, particularly for EnviroSafe which operates at lower head pressure than R134 or even R12. The low pressure is too low. There is virtually no cooling at all unless the system is overcharged.
