because the panel had started to rust at the wheel arch - the new wing cost me £85 ($135) in the right colour and amazed me by looking excellent when it arrived.
My 2.3 fpt Anniversary is getting a "birthday" at almost exactly 15 years old - as well as the fender I've sanded and re-finished all five 3-spoke Aero wheels, with new centres: new rear discs and pads (all Brembo) go on next, one downside of taking the wheels off for finishing was that I couldn't ignore the skinny pads! Plus new struts for the rear hatch, a fresh Saab Scania badge for the nose and a fresh filter for the ACC. Now that we are getting a little belated winter I might even resuscitate the driver's seat heater, assuming it's not the switch.
For the wheels I used Auto-Glym acrylic spray, and finished off with Wurth lacquer - they got three coats of each product. There was a lot of corrosion which I put down to leaving alloy wheel cleaner on for too long, so the lacquer seemed an extra good idea. The silver isn't *exactly* right, a tiny bit more grey than the original, but it matches the silver car well and went on very easily, seems to contain lots of solids so filled tiny scratches after rubbing down with Scotchbrite, and I'm certainly not going to complain about a can of paint that cost under £6 ($9.50) delivered and isn't empty after 5 16" wheels.
One of the best improvements a few years back was a new windscreen, paid for my the insurance of course. That really makes you feel better about the view down the bonnet.
After that, deal with stone chips, give it a proper polish and maybe freshen up the leather and I will have a new old car, for a while at least...
