Well, my story is probably not normal, but I bought my 9-5 with 120,000, drove it home, and the next morning the check engine light came on. Bad DIC. When I bought it, the AC compressor was bad (knew this) and replaced the compressor/receiver/dryer and expansionn valve. Of course, as a 2001, I wanted to check the sludge issue so I pulled the oil pan and valve cover and replaced all the seals/gaskets. It didn't have the PCV six so installed that, plugs, radiator hoses. The oil pump o-ring was leaking so replaced that and belt/tensioner stuff. The transmission lines were leaking at the connections so I replaced the o-rings and the transmission fluid. After I got it back together, it wouldn't start. Put a new cps in and it started right up. Drove it for a couple months and alternator went bad. This summer, the AC wasn't really cold, so after a bunch of work and replacing condenser, I found the recirculation arm was broken. That helped the AC a lot, but it never did get ice cold with all AC parts replaced. Then the battery wouldn't stay charged so I replaced that. Before I traded it in, I know that the CV joint on the passenger side was bad and the tires needed replacing.
So, even though I did all the work myself, I figure I spent about $200/month for 8 months. hahaha. And people say, well, you replaced a lot and it will probably not need much for a while. I just didn't want to take that chance and traded it for a Yukon. Still have my 9000 though.
