A 2004 or later car still isn't expensive and is unlikely to have sludge issues. We have 2003 Linear wagon with 122K on it that has proven very reliable. We did the PCV6 change shortly after getting the car and done the oil with synthetic ever 5K.
We've replaced the heater valve (normal failure item, $55 with the part for a Caddy Catera), the vacuum booster and the evaporator. Otherwise it's been normal maintenance. Need to do the exhaust system soon so I won't have to do it in winter.
The 9-5 is a smoother, more refined car than my '96 9K, much quieter and probably nicer on a long trip. But my 9K is not stock and has a bit of an edge, so the comparo isn't totally fair. Most of the time I like the 9K better, but I have to say that I'd be 9-5 shopping if the 9K needed expensive work or was crunched in an accident. Just check out what you're getting and if it's a '03 or earlier pull the valve cover and drop the oil pan to check for sludge.
