VW/Audis are good looking and great performing cars. The bodies are well rustproofed with plastic in appropriate places, and the paint quality is excellent, so they retain their looks for a long time. Our 2001 A6 was almost 13 years old and still looked great, and with only 77,000 miles it was still desirable and worth some money used - sold it to someone we know who valued its condition and the recent work I put into it.
Unfortunately, they are incredibly complex machines, have wear and replacement items that are difficult to access, and have had some "value engineering" applied which can be infuriating on an expensive car. An example of this is the plastic thermostat housing on my A6 (2001 was the first year) which warped and was replaced with a used aluminum part from a prior year car - got to do a thermostat job again.
We enjoyed the period that we owned this car (bought used), but having had an A4 before it I knew what was around the corner after a certain age. Also note that a V6 with automatic and quattro uses a LOT of gasoline.
Congratulations on your move to NYC. My friends who live in Manhattan have not owned cars for years, it's too much hassle and expense. When they need a car they rent one, i.e for a weekend upstate. The 9000 is a good choice for street parking as it has bumper protection strips, unlike most modern cars.
