Thanks for the info, I'll try tapping the pulley with a soft hammer to see if I can get it loose. That big snap ring will be the next challenge, I might have to buy a big set of snap-ring pliers as you did if I can't find one to borrow somewhere.
The following looks like it might do the trick if a 2-inch spread is enough, and the price isn't bad...
