First time I did this, I used an old pair of needle nose with small tips, and a couple small screwdrivers to put behind the ring as I worked at it so as not to lose progress. Worked, but was a pain. Re-installation was even more interesting, as the ring snapped off the pliers and away into the dark recesses of the garage. Next time I did this, I got the Harbor Freight large snap ring plier kit. Oh - pay attention to the orientation of the snap ring - one side has a slight bevel to it.
