When I was at Harbor Freight I didn't see anything in a snap ring plier that looked big enough. I made a quick attempt with the long-reach plier. The ends fit the holes without modification, but I have not yet been able to get the snap ring to budge. I can see that working with this much spring tension I'd better wear leather gloves and eye protection, maybe even a face shield.
So far the only proper snap-ring tool I've seen locally that looked large enough to do the job is a $75 tool at NAPA. (Saw it when I stopped there today to pick up an oil filter.) I'll have to check whether Advance or Autozone have something similar since they'll loan tools out.
