Hi Dave,
could you post pictures of spark plugs and what did you find inside cylinders?
light white deposit on plugs is pretty normal.
Generally if the car is running too lean/rich then O2 sensors should detect it, ECU should store trouble code and CEL should lit. You can attach diagnostic scanner or a scope to check first O2 sensor (the one before the cat) readout - it should alternate rich-lean-rich-lean-... Second sensor (after cat) only checks if the cat works properly.
