Just because the sticker price is north of $40K, doesn't mean it SELLS for more than 40K.

I doubt any SAAB dealer would turn away $35K for a new SE Convertible, with sales tax included. That's SAAB's US strategy - try to be comparable to Mercedes & BMW on sticker price then heavily discount.

Good luck in finding a Mercedes or BMW convertible for $35K. The 325iC starts at about $36K, but balloons well over $40K unless you want a manual transmission car without a CD and vinyl (not cloth) seats. The Mercedes 320 CLK (forget the SLK, only a 2 seater) starts at about $45K and I think the waiting list is now down to a year or so. You would be doing well to get either at sticker.

The SAAB is closer in price and quality to the Toyota Solara ($30K, but the dealer will add $2K to $3K as "limited avaliability premium") and Chrysler Sebring (a relative bargain, but fit and finish are awful) than to BMW or Mercedes. I think the SAAB is superior to Toyota and Chrysler and inferior to BMW and Mercedes and is priced accordingly.

You get what you pay for! I paid for a car that's a convertible with a decent size trunk, that quick but not overpowering, and can carry 4 people fairly comfortably. I don't expect Mercedes luxury or BMW handling. I didn't pay for it either.

BTW, if you really want to see an overpriced Swedish convertible, check out the Volvo C-70.
