PA, hilly area, snow/ice, 2001 9/3 vs. a 4WD

1st, thanks Jeremy R and Swedecar for your comments to my previous post. This site is banned at my office, so I wish I could have responded earlier (it also hinders the convenience of requesting advice when the "potential purchase", once owned, requires, immediate attention, bummer).
Foremost issue in our consideration for buying the 2001 9-3 is boiling down to winter traction. There is a steep hill coming up to our home. The road to daughter's school is 25mph limit, steep uphill and twisty with 6 sharp turns, plus reverse it for coming home. Of course, school will close when roads are too bad and the township plows/salts the road pretty fast, but still, JIC...
Presume safety as the pure consideration, given a choice, would you choose to put your spouse and child in a 4WD or 2001 9-3 with quality 15" snow tyres in described road conditions?
We have to make a decision this weekend. TIA for your advice.
