Going up an icy hill.
The story takes me back to high school, probably 3 years ago. It was a very icy/snowy/sleety day and my school was emptying out for the day. The "shortcut" out of the jammed parking lot was a verrry steep hill near the side of the school. I'm talking like the steepest hill (but short) you could imagine.
As I sit in traffic watching the hill, gauging whether I should attempt it or not, I see a friend head for hill in his 4WD Explorer. He gets about halfway to the crest of the hill and starts spinning his tires and sliding backwards down. Another guy in a Grand Cherokee tries it and the same thing happens. I sat and watched (lots of traffic!) a few other cars and a Tundra 4x4 pickup all do the same thing.
So what do I do? I head for the hill.
Enter Joe, the slightly insane "security guard" in his leather jumpsuit, work boots and furry hat (think Cousin Eddie in Christmas Vacation). He runs over with a rather crazed look (always had a rather crazed look) and said to me "All them trucks couldn't make it up. You're not gonna make it up in a Volvo."
So I say "If I had a Volvo I wouldn't try and make it up." He doesn't quite get it, but I proceed to smoothly make it up the hill in awe of everyone watching down below. Barely even spun my tires.
This is all in a 9000 with great Hakka snows and no TCS.
I've never been stranded in my Saabs in the snowy Boston winters. I feel much more secure in my car than in a top-heavy truck, because its a lot easier to stop and control a skid in a car.
Saabs are known to handle great in the snow, and I put my vote towards the Saab also.
