Having spend a lot of years in the car business I'm always amazed at the tortured logic people use to justify buying the cars they do. They go hunting three weekends a year so they buy a Hummer, they tow a boat to the marina in the spring and back again in the fall so they buy a one ton crew cab duelly truck. Thirty years ago 99% of the cars on the road were rear wheel drive, had bias ply tires, drum brakes, with points and carbs--if it just started in the winter you considered yourself lucky. In the early seventies when we had two small children, our only car was a Triumph TR4 and yet we manage to get everywhere we needed to go in Michigan winters without snow tires. And you're seriously wondering if you can get by with a front wheel drive car with traction control, anti- lock brakes, air bags and snow tires on all four wheels? The number of days when you would be happy you have 4wd amounts to about three weeks a year. The number of days you would truly need it amount to about half a dozen--which means 99% of the time you won't even use the 4wd. I vote for the Saab.
